John Backwell

John is a design and technology education lecturer on the BA Ed and PGCE programmes and co-ordinates the Goldsmiths element of the MEng Design and Innovation programme jointly run with Queen Mary College.

Previously John worked as a freelance ICT, mathematics and education consultant for local authorities, universities and schools. He has a strong teaching background having worked in inner-city secondary schools for over ten years, six as head of department.

John’s research into cognition, learning and thinking skills has led to the development of the Cognitive Acceleration through Technology Education Project (CATE) devised and written with his colleague Tony Hamaker. The project aims to improve the information processing skills of 12-14yr olds through a cognitive development programme focussed upon a design and technology learning environment.

John's role within the M21 research project is to co-ordinate the Envisioning group.
